Here's the information from Friday's writing prompt. Please let me know if you have any other questions with it. The prompt is: Write a story where the first and last sentences are the same but have totally different meanings.
Notes: In writing the story, please include a variety of dependent and independent clauses, gerund phrases, infinitive phrases and participial phrases. Work with verb moods as well, trying to establish a voice for yourself and your character(s).
For English 7, you have the same prompt but need to incorporate a variety of dependent and independent clauses, appositive and absolute phrases, and work with finding a rhythm in mixing simple sentences and structures with more complex sentences and structures.

Here's the link to the Dracula and Friends logic puzzle from class today. It's not mandatory to complete, but for those interested in figuring it out, the first person to respond (e-mail, in class, before class) with the correct answer could have a reward awaiting them.
As the eighth grade readies to self-publish an anthology of short stories about the future, it's important we first thank you for completing the permission slip and allowing participation in the project and for offering your time and expertise in speaking with the eighth grade about the writing/publishing process. I'll contact those who offered within the next week to schedule a day/time to come in. Thank you again!
Preparations have already begun for the anthology. We now have a theme (future), a title (Today's Tomorrow) and the various groupings to put everything together. We've also discussed character traits and types of characters and the process of creating and developing fictional characters (building a working history for each character). This is all work that should be completed at home, as we'll start discussions on plot and structure this week. I'll try to update progress often.

Thank you to all who've submitted their Citrus forms. All who have and who plan to sell received a packet this afternoon with more details. If anyone hasn't returned the form yet, regardless of your participation in the sale, please do so. The due date was today, but Mr. Ancypa will still accept the forms through this week.
Along the same line, class shirt order forms went out last week. We've received quite a few already, but this is a reminder that they're due Friday, October 13. Please get those in soon as well.
In regard to class updates, here are quick few...
Religion: We reviewed chapter 2 information today and have an open-book test tomorrow. We've also begun discussions in Decision Point, a textbook/curriculum designed for Confirmation education. For the time being, we'll complete two lessons each Thursday. As more preparations (letters and reports and such) need to happen for Confirmation, Decision Point and other Confirmation-related material will take up the majority of each week. More on that at a later date.
English 7: Within the context of one generation's influence on another, we've been working through the rough drafts of our nonfiction narratives. I'm currently conferencing with each student to discuss his rough draft and into developing a better understanding of their writing mechanics and their writing process. We also have a vocabulary test this Friday on the cumulative review section for units 1-3. They've had two weeks to prepare for the test and to complete the workbook.
English 8: We're nearing the end of our poetry unit and building up to the short story unit, which will be the focus until Christmas vacation. The class has discussed a multitude of elements in poetry as means of better understanding our own writing styles and skills, whether it be the emotional and sensory appeal of imagery to understanding tone and its impact on a text to sentence and punctuation manipulation, word connotations and precision of language. They've done remarkable work in their six-word memoirs and have recently completed two quatrain poems, with another poem of their choosing to come.
History: Chapter 15 of the textbook covers the Civil War, and we've just finished discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of each side, the strategic plans for each as well as the public opinion leading up to the first battle at Bull Run. They received information on a project today related to the chapter. Due dates and everything are on the sheet and were discussed in class today.

Reminding all eighth grade parents, there's a mandatory parent meeting Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7pm. It'll start at the church with a brief prayer service and will move into room 10/11 afterward.
It's important to attend, as most, if not all, matters of the year are discussed. Parents will receive (more than likely A LOT of) paperwork with information about the year ahead; parents, teachers and administration will discuss specific dates and events such as Washington D.C., Confirmation, high school placement tests, etc. There'll also be sign-up sheets for various committees/clubs/groups for parents to join.
A reminder about the meeting was sent out recently through Flocknote, so if you didn't receive it, please sign up for the service as soon as possible. Flocknote now has an app, so it's accessible, easy to use and is the main communication link for everyone.

We're four weeks in, but I'd still like to welcome everyone to the new school year and to my website. This is the place to find information about the classes — weekly goings-on and curriculum-type matters. I'll typically update the site every Friday after school. But, for any pressing issues, homework questions/comments, or important notes, I'll include those in an individual update as needed, as well as in Flocknote texts/e-mails. If anyone hasn't already, please sign up for grade-level Flocknote updates AND individual teacher updates. It's important to sign up for both, as not all information affects the whole grade or the whole junior high, so sometimes it's just a homeroom thing.
Before getting into class updates, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the hurricane relief efforts. In homeroom this year, we're focusing a lot on leadership and embracing the responsibility of being leaders of the school through example. Our participation in the efforts is one example of accepting that role, and I appreciate all who donated toward the effort. We had a good turnout from our homeroom, and it's on display with our hands on the hallway banner outside the main office.
Now, here's a breakdown of everything we've focused on in class so far:
Religion: Our religion curriculum focuses on the history of the Church in shaping our understanding of our roles as Catholics. We spent last week discussing our ideas of what Church is, the Church as mystery and the various images of the Church. This week focuses on the roots of the Church — traditions, influences, the Bible and what it means to represent the Church. We'll also start discussing Confirmation and will use the Decision Point series to direct discussions on understanding the Sacrament and what it means to be Confirmed.
English 7: In seventh-grade English, we're starting with a unit on narrative nonfiction. The goal is for students to master concepts of narrative writing — character, plot, dialogue, sensory details, etc. — and to ultimately write their own narrative nonfiction piece. Currently, we finished reading "Two Kinds" from Amy Tan, and the students are working on point of view and rewriting a scene from another character's perspective so to better understand the character's traits and motives as well as the importance of point of view in a story.
English 8: Eighth graders recently completed writing six-word memoirs. The first semester is creative writing driven, with a focus on diction, conciseness and meaning in our writing. This week, we moved into poetry and eventually we'll work into short stories, all of which will build toward a self-published book that we'll release around Christmas time.
History: Picking up from last year, we've started discussing the Civil War. Current focus is on chapter 14 and the beginnings of the war. By week's end, we'll have finished chapter 14 and will have a test next week, before moving on to the war itself. I'll give students an exact test date this week.
